Spring 2011 Wedding Dress Trends

Designers recently debuted their Spring 2011 wedding dress collections.  The overall focus is on gowns that are feminine, soft and fashion-forward.

One of the most sweeping trends are “three-dimensional” dresses made of  Tulle and Organza.  There is also move toward slimmer silhouettes and less emphasis on embellishments.  The most fashion-forward dresses focus on using beautiful fabrics that are draped, layered and detailed.   The trends in wedding dresses also includes Color, colored trims, Princess and Mermaid styles.

Color

The Avante-Garde Bride will have more options than ever to select a colored gown.  Vera Wang showcased this Deep Gray Silk Tulle gown in her Spring Collection.  The intricately crafted flowers on the bodice and skirt add dimension and the Black Satin sash enhances the waistline.  This beautiful Deep Gray gown by Vera Wang  is made of Silk Tulle with intricately crafted flowers on the bodice and skirt add dimension and the Black Satin sash enhances the waistline.

Colored Trims

For the Brides that haven’t completely embraced wearing a colored gown, they may opt to incorporate color in their sash or ribbon.  The choice of color can be very personal or it may be a color that coordinates with wedding colors.  This gown is from my Elle Couture Designs collection is made of Silk Tissue Taffeta, detailed with Alencon Lace that is embellished with Swarovski crystals.  A Black Satin ribbon was used to add a striking touch of drama and sophistication.

 Tulle or Organza

Dresses made of Organza or Tulle are light and airy and a perfect choice for weddings taking place in the warmer months.  Many designers are using multiple layers to create volume and creating ruffles from these fabrics.  This gown from Marchesa utilizes layering of long ruffles that resemble the petals on a flower.

 Mermaid Gowns

The Mermaid silhouette continues to be popular.  While this style is not suited for every woman, the lucky ones will no doubt exude a sense of sensuality and femininity.  This gown from Pronovias combines soft layering and rouching on the bodice, while the layers of ruffles create a very light and airy feel.

Asymmetrical Necklines

For women who like one-shoulder dresses, Designers are continuing to include this style in their Spring collections.  This style show off the shoulders and neck while the design also provides comfort and is secure to wear throughout the wedding festivities.  The design is modern, chic and sophisticated.  This dramatic Carolina Herrera gown draws attention to the neck, shoulders and upper back, and is ideal for a variety of wedding styles and settings.

Princess (A-Line)

The traditional silhouette of the Princess (also called an A-Line) gown continues to be the most popular style.  Women of varying shapes and sizes can easily wear this gown and is suited for all types of weddings.  This Christos gown combines the layering of Tulle to create a soft silhouette and emphasizes the natural waistline.

Just as fashion is always changing to keep up with today’s modern woman, the wedding industry will also continue to evolve and change to represent today’s modern bride.  The most important thing to keep in mind is to choose the gown you love and one that suits your body type.  You want to exude confidence and be radiant on your wedding day, which can be achieved by staying true to your personality, style  and taste and not letting a “trend” dictate your choice in a gown.

2011 Wedding Industry Predictions

The wedding industry continues to evolve and change over time.  Among the most notable shifts are the increase in “DIY” weddings for the brides that like to be closely involved with the process of creating favors, invitations, decorations, etc., and  “Green” or “Eco friendly” weddings for earth conscious couples.

As we move into 2011, the number of weddings will continue at the same rate; however, there will be an emphasis on the couple staying within their budget by inviting fewer guests and scaling back on non-essential items.

Couples are now choosing to get married later in life, with the average age being between 27 and 32.  In addition, many couples are contributing to the costs of their wedding, an average of 60%.

The following are some additional trends that we are sure to see for the upcoming year:

  • The average number of guests will be 130 to 140.
  • Popular months to get married are:  May, June, September and October.
  • Most popular color families are:   Blues, Purples, Pins and Greens.
  • Couples will book with venues and vendors closer to their wedding date.
  • Due to lower costs, there will be an increase in weddings taking place on “off-peak” days, such as Fridays and Sundays.
  • Designers will increase their market share by offering more affordable lines.  For example,  Vera Wang has partnered with David’s Bridal and will offer a line of wedding dresses beginning in Spring 2011 at a price that caps at $1,500.
  • Reliance on friends and family to support the wedding, either with a financial contribution, time and/or talent.
  • Brides will continue to search for designer dresses at affordable prices.
  • Grooms are opting to purchase suits for their attire.
